Floodplain meadow

Last weekend the summer growth was cut back in the floodplain meadow. The purpose of leaving it until now has been to let flowers seed (although some management has been needed to keep nettles and thistles from taking over). Cutting it now will allow autumn sowing of some selected hay meadow flowers (eg yellow rattle) as well as removing nutrients for part of the meadow to ensure subsequent flowers aren’t outcompeted. Grass was removed by hand with a scythe but for the larger expanse of tough ragwort stems a power scythe was used.
